Phil is one of the original 19 students in Ms. Frizzle's class, from The Magic School Bus book series by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen. He was cut from the universe of The Magic School Bus and The Magic School Bus Rides Again, as he was merged with Arnold.

Appearance

Phil appears to be of Caucasian descent with ginger red hair and freckles. He wears a green sweater with brown pants and brown shoes.

Trivia

• He, Phoebe and Arnold are based off of or named after people whom Joanna and Bruce knew. Phil was named for Phillip A. Cole, Joanna’s widower. Arnold happens to be based on a friend of Bruce’s son. Phoebe is named after the editor of the book series, Phoebe Yeh (dedication for Inside a Hurricane).
• Arnold’s TV counterpart is based partly on Phil. His hair was changed from blond to ginger like Phil and he was given freckles, and since The Magic School Bus Rides Again, he wears a green sweater over-top his polo and cuts his hair short to further the reference to him. Phil’s interest in geology from Inside the Earth also transferred over to Arnold in the TV series, as seen in episodes such as “Rocks and Rolls,” “Goes Cellular,” “The Battle for Rock Mountain,” and “The Magnetic Mambo.” Despite Arnold’s hair being red like Phil in the TV series, stock art from the original series still keeps him blond.
• In Lost in the Solar System, during the page where the kids and Janet tell their families about the trip, Phil is revealed to have a sister.
