"Due to circumstances beyond my control, your cocoa tree is temporarily experiencing a cocoa bean shortage. Signed, Inspector 47."
—Inspector 47's note at the beginning of the episode
Inspector47

Inspector 47 (later promoted to Inspector 22), voiced by Matt Frewer, is a one-time character appearing in the 1996 episode, In the Rainforest. He is a rainforest inspector of French origin who owns a patch of the Amazon.

History[]

At the beginning of the episode, Ms. Frizzle's class gives Ms. Frizzle her very own cocoa bean tree in the rainforest and her first shipment of cocoa beans harvested from the tree. Yet, only one bean is found inside, along with a note from Inspector 47, saying the tree was having a cocoa bean shortage.

After they get to the rainforest, Inspector 47 traps Ms. Frizzle's class, thinking he'd caught the cocoa bean thieves. When he realizes his mistake, he quickly apologizes and begs them not to tell Inspector 1. D.A. asks who he is and he introduces himself. After some back-and-forth, he theorises that his green-eyed neighbor, Inspector 46, had something to do with the cocoa bean shortage and leaves.

Later on, he calls out to the peccary D.A. is riding on to turn around, but the peccary ploughs right through and gets his suit muddy. He angrily chastises D.A. that the peccaries aren't allowed in his section of the rainforest. D.A. explains to him all that she's learned about the web of life in relation to the cacao trees, but gets stumped before Tim falls off a peccary and realizes that Inspector 47 covered the ground in artificial turf. D.A. asks if this is true and Inspector 47 bursts into tears, asking how he was to know that it would ruin his cocoa trees. Tim explains to him everything about the web of life and how it works and that it's what Earth Day is all about.

Inspector473

Inspector 47 laments that he just wanted was to save on his dry-cleaning bill and that he'd spoiled the web of life. Ms. Frizzle and Phoebe tell him that in this case, things can be returned to how they were. Inspector 47 proceeds to angrily tear up the artificial turf and call for the peccaries to come back.

Several months later, another shipment of cocoa beans arrives. This time, loads of beans spill from the tin. Ms. Frizzle reads out another note, saying that a bumper crop of cocoa beans had been produced. It's signed "Inspector 22", and the note says that thanks to the class, he received a promotion.

In the producer segment, a kid on the phone mocks Inspector 47, saying he was the lamest, most overdone official he'd ever seen, like he was straight out of a cartoon. Inspector 47 phones the producer and says he heard the kid's comment. The producer asks if he'd like to talk to the kid and Inspector 47 agrees. He then asks if the kid's calling him a cartoon, and the kid says that's what he is (breaking the fourth wall). He asks who would run around the rainforest in a white suit, speaking the way he does. Inspector 47 confidently says he would and that he does, and no matter how he looks at it, they're both connected by the web of life. The kid says they won't be connected by telephone if he hangs up and swiftly does while Inspector 47 stammers.
