Dr. Shelby, or Uncle Shelby to Valerie and Fiona, is the Frizzle sisters' uncle. He is a marine biologist who appeared in Goes to Mussel Beach. One of his most favorite specimens is a Mitellus californianus mussel named Mert.

- He is the only male Frizzle with a physical appearance in the TV canon. Previous male Frizzles have been only quoted by the sisters in “As I always say…” one-liners.
- Typical of a Frizzle, he is shown with Frizzle technology, such as a grabber arm with a rubber-hose cartoon glove he uses to cleanly handle Mert.
