It is the second novel to be narrated by Carlos since "Space Explorers."

"Hi, I'm Carlos -- one of the kids in Ms. Frizzle's class. I know Ms. Frizzle thinks of weird ways to teach about science, but she never had a crazier idea than challenging Mr. O'Neatly's class to a science contest. The contest topic was magnetism, and we hadn't even started our unit yet. Ms. Frizzle said we shouldn't worry, that we'd have a natural attraction to the subject. I know our teacher has a magnetic personality, but this time she might have gone too far. Wait 'til you hear how she taught us about Amazing Magnetism."

• This book takes place while the students are still in the third grade, as Carlos points out that Mr. O'Neatly is "the other third-grade teacher" on page 3.
